How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need?

Updated: Oct 30, 2018

I promise the intro picture will make sense ;-)

Right off the bat, the answer to this question is different for everyone. I understand if that answer strikes you as rather ambiguous, and if it did, please read on.

It's simply true! Chinese Medicine sees every individual as just that - an individual. Therefore, every individual is treated uniquely according to their own symptoms, complaints, and medical history. Every individual also heals that way, in accordance to their own symptoms, complaints, and medical history...along with lifestyle and ability to complete any self-care advise given.

Now, with all that being said, on average, it is safe to expect to give your acupuncturist about 8-12 visits before you make any decision. Commonly, most people seem to have an idea as to how their body is responding to the treatments, and to the acupuncturist, around the 4th or 5th session.

Chinese Medicine and acupuncture do not work by force. It's not medicine done with a sledgehammer; it's actually a conversation with your body. I have an analogy I've been using for years that most people resonate with. Think of bringing home a new puppy. As many of us know, new puppies can have "accidents" in the house because they haven't been taught how to choose going to the bathroom outside. In the beginning of having that puppy, they need to be reminded frequently by the trainer to go to the bathroom outside. After a bit of time (the length of time being different for each puppy) you find yourself not needing to remind the puppy as often. After a little more time and training, your puppy has learned the good behavior and is now potty trained.

The symptoms are the puppy, your acupuncturist is the trainer, and you are the house.

Then, maybe, that dog chews your shoes...and you need to get the trainer back over...

As you can understand, a trainer cannot tell you exactly how long they will need to work with your puppy, but they can give you a common frame of reference and what changes you should start seeing and feeling, along with homework self-care "training" between visits.

I hope this has created some understanding as to why you will need to see your acupuncturist multiple times to help your body become well. Please feel free to email me from the form on the home page with any further questions.
